Thursday, 29 January 2026 — With yet another weekend of bad weather forecasted, I decided not to wait any longer and finally maiden the replacement Eflite Gee Bee R2 1.0m. I’ve been eager to get this aircraft back in the air after losing the first one, and despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the window of flyable weather was just too tempting to pass up. The maiden itself turned out to be a success, though not without a few tense moments. Almost immediately, the conditions began to mirror those of the previous crash: strong, gusty winds with sudden changes in airspeed, especially noticeable on turns into the wind. Wanting to stay cautious, I allowed the Gee Bee to slow down slightly while turning into a direct headwind. That decision quickly proved risky, as the aircraft began to show the early signs of an impending stall—exactly what I now believe caused the loss of the first Gee Bee. This time, however, experience made the difference. Recognizing what was happening, I added power promptly and was able to power out of the stall before it fully developed. That moment alone confirmed the most likely cause of the original crash: letting the Gee Bee get too slow in a turn under high-wind conditions. The Gee Bee’s short wings and high wing loading really leave very little margin for error, especially when the wind is working against you. The winds were challenging enough that even the Freewing F-22A Raptor (02) 70mm had its hands full. The Raptor, which normally handles rough air quite well, was getting knocked around more than usual, particularly on approach and during low passes. That alone speaks volumes about just how demanding the conditions were that day. Despite the wind and the extra workload on the sticks, it was still a very satisfying outing. The Gee Bee survived its maiden, valuable lessons were reinforced, and confidence was restored in understanding the aircraft’s behavior. Add in good company at the field, and it still ended up being a good day of flying—challenging, educational, and ultimately rewarding.
