Loving God is perhaps the most decisive evidence of a regenerated soul. James identifies true Christians as those who love God (Jas 1:12) and who endure trials out of that strong love. Any relationship strongly bonded by love will withstand all kinds of adversity. So the one who endures the trials of life reveals himself to be a true lover of God, and he will receive God's promised reward. That eternal security is the core of the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. Maybe it's the phone call. The accident. The diagnosis. The loss of a job-or worse, a loved one. Maybe it's the endless, isolating struggle no one else seems to understand. Life is full of trouble. But for believers, suffering doesn't mean God's plan for your life has gone off the rails. In fact, the Bible makes it clear that you should expect various trials--and even "consider it all joy" when you encounter these inevitable tests of your faith. The true saint thirsts for God, no matter the opposition (Ps 42ff.). He understands the call to love God God with all his heart, soul, strength, and mind (Lk 10:27) regardless of the deep waters the Lord leads him through. The foundational religious affection of his heart and the fruit of the Spirit's regenerative work is love for God. And that love is what perseveres him through any trial. Join us this coming Lord's Day for our final look at James' first test of saving faith, that of perseverance in trials. Our study will be "Christian Triumph in Troubles, pt3" (Jas 1:9-12).
