ChickShaw 5.0 vs. Suscovich Mobile Chicken Tractor Comparison!

Building the perfect mobile chicken tractor has been quite the journey on our homestead. After experimenting with several designs, two models have stood out: the Chickshaw 5.0 (designed by Justin Rhodes) and the Suscovich chicken tractor. Each has its strengths, and we’ve found that both serve different but equally important roles in our setup. The Chickshaw 5.0 has become a favorite, especially for managing our meat birds. It’s incredibly easy to move across our pasture, thanks to its large, non-flat tires, and its open-bottom design allows manure to fall through (thus fertilizing the soil without creating a mess). This tractor is lightweight yet sturdy, making it simple enough for our kids to move daily. Plus, it has built-in nesting boxes (cleverly made from milk crates) that are easily turned to prevent laying when not needed. While we opted for metal roofing to reflect heat, I’m reconsidering that choice, as it might not be necessary since the birds only use the tractor at night. On the other hand, the Suscovich chicken tractor has been our go-to for brooding and temporary housing. Its walk-in design makes it easy to care for the birds, and its solid structure (with added roosting bars for stability) offers plenty of space. Although it’s a bit more cumbersome to move — requiring an adult rather than a child — the flexibility it offers by allowing us to keep birds enclosed when necessary is invaluable. The downside? It’s held together with zip ties, which, while functional, isn’t my favorite method. Still, the tractor is economical to build and gets the job done. Both tractors have their place on our homestead. The Chickshaw is perfect for daily pasture rotation, keeping our birds healthy and our soil enriched, while the Suscovich tractor serves as a great brooder extension and temporary housing.
