A GlobalCastMD Production Some Tips & Tricks for Enemas: Explained Monica Holder, BSN, RNII, Nurse Coordinator, Colorectal Center: "Hi, I'm Monica Holder, nurse coordinator at Cincinnati Children's Colorectal Center. And today, we'd like to discuss some common symptoms that you might encounter when giving an enema, and maybe some tips or tricks or things to consider that might help you feel better. Often, you can have nausea and vomiting if you're given an enema right after you have a large meal. Sometimes you need some time to digest your food before then giving a large-volume enema. So, maybe consider giving some space between a large meal and the time you're giving an enema can also be helpful. Another thing we hear about when giving enemas is sometimes dizziness. This can be a side effect when patients are dehydrated. So, if you're feeling any sort of dizziness when giving your enema, please make sure you've had a good amount of hydration throughout your day. Water or general electrolyte drinks are always good. Another side effect we hear when giving an enema is maybe just pelvic discomfort. This can happen sometimes if patients have not emptied their bladder effectively before the enema. So, if you're someone who just has a hard time in general emptying the bladder and experience this discomfort, consider emptying the bladder just before giving the enema. After giving the enema, we are looking for good results into the toilet. If you are experiencing that after giving the enema you are not getting good results, then you may want to consider a couple of things. Work with your care provider to be sure the enema ingredients are the best ingredients for your child at that time. As the child grows and changes, it is often that the enema solution also needs to be adjusted. So, if you're having trouble with having good results after giving the enema, please be sure to connect with your provider to see if the enema solution needs to be adjusted.
