🚧 A massive renovation project in Washington Heights has gone to the wayside, and NYC Councilmember Shaun Abreu was joined by his community on Friday to call for the city and Judlau—the contractor behind the $140 million infrastructure investment—to finally complete the work that began in 2018. "We are standing today at a construction site that unfortunately has come to symbolize everything that's broken with government projects," Abreu said. The project was originally supposed to be completed by 2022, but Abreu said that no work has been done at the in-progress site this year, leaving it sitting at 75% completion. Residents of the River Arts Co-op chanted "finish the job" while rallying with Abreu, who lives in the building next door on Riverside Drive, as they complained about the hazardous debris, altered traffic patterns, blocked pedestrian and bicycle access, and blocked views caused by the construction. Jack Cole, 87, experienced life-threatening issues with the construction last year when he had a heart attack, and EMS couldn't find a way to get to him. "When my wife called the ambulance for my heart attack, we told them where we were, gave them the address, and after a few minutes they called back and said 'how do we get in there?'" Cole told 1010 WINS. "They didn't even know what they were going to do." Abreu said that Judlau—which holds 30% of all street infrastructure projects across the city—walked off the job, despite the city never authorizing them to do so. In a statement, the Department of Transportation told 1010 WINS that it is trying to address the challenges. 🎤 Marla Diamond reports 📹 📸 Marla Diamond 🔊 Tune into 1010 WINS at 92.3 FM for more local news
