The D Major fugue of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, book one, starts with a big contrast in note values: a bunch of 32d notes followed by the much slower dotted eight note - sixteen. What does Bach want us to do as performers? Treating the 32d notes ornamentational? Or structural? Solving that question is a really important one, since it determines much of what follows.
