Transcript: Hello, and welcome to Speak American English with Lyman Holton. My name is Lyman Holton. In this lesson, we’re going to talk about another American English phrasal verb. Are you ready? Let’s begin. “blow off” The verbal phrase “blow off” is usually used when we purposely don’t do something that we are supposed to do. We might say “I BLEW OFF my dental appointment and now I’ve got a cavity.” “Blow off” is also used in another way. If, for example, you see a lot of dust on an old book, you could say “Hey, don’t BLOW that dust OFF in here.” Here are a few examples of how to use “blow off” in sentences: Of course, you got fired! “How many times do you think you can BLOW OFF the boss?” “I wouldn’t recommend BLOWING OFF paying your rent,” unless you have a very large, warm car to sleep in. Hmm ... That’s strange, I can’t find my dog. “Maybe I shouldn’t have BLOWN OFF my neighbor’s complaints” about all the barking. I told my wife to stop spending so much money on clothes, but “she just BLEW me OFF.” I hate that! All right, young man! Get in your room and do your homework, right now! Your teacher called and told me that “you’ve been BLOWING OFF doing your homework, again.” What do you mean you’re surprised your car broke down? “You’ve BLOWN OFF changing the oil in that thing for over a year!” I’m surprised it’s lasted this long. In our next lesson, we’ll cover another American English phrasal verb. Goodbye for now. Phrasal Verb - Blow Off - Video 31
