In this video, I focus on ensuring the health and productivity of fig trees, especially addressing common issues that arise early in their life after propagating them from cuttings. I've observed a strong correlation between the health of a fig tree and its fruit production. It's common to see trees with both healthy and unhealthy shoots. I advise allowing multiple shoots to grow in the beginning and then selecting the healthiest and most vigorous ones. This approach not only promises a robust tree but also addresses the variability found in individual fig tree buds. Each bud can be genetically unique with different levels of hormones, carbohydrates, and, notably, the fig mosaic virus. Check out the companion guide to this video on the Fig Boss blog! https://www.figboss.com/post/unhealth... To combat the effects of the fig mosaic virus, rejuvenation pruning is my favorite technique. I strongly recommend pruning out the unhealthy growth close to the base to ensure the tree's long-term health. It's crucial to recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy growth on a fig tree, as the latter shows clear signs of the virus, such as spots on the leaves, mottling, and deformities. This method works for fig trees in both containers and the ground. I also caution against propagating from an unhealthy branch, as it could lead to trees with undesirable growth patterns. Embracing a hard pruning strategy, especially during winter, is beneficial because it promotes the emergence of healthier shoots.
