The Kia's unconventional face features a set of alien-looking headlights and a distinct grille design. Its bodywork is sleek and muscular, and its taillights draw comparisons to those on the new all-electric Kia EV6. We don't know what powertrains the U.S.-spec Sportage will have, but they'll likely be shared with the recently redesigned Hyundai Tucson, with which it shares a platform. That suggests a 187-hp four-cylinder engine will be standard; a hybrid or plug-in hybrid could also be offered. Likewise, we think the 2023 Sportage could be available with a turbo-four that makes around 280 horsepower, especially if it's inherited from the mid-size Sorento SUV. What's New for 2023? There's also an all-wheel-drive-only plug-in hybrid that shares its gasoline engine with the regular hybrid but adds a more powerful electric motor and a bigger battery pack. We sampled both the base four-cylinder and the hybrid powertrain during our initial test drive and were more satisfied with the latter than the former. The hybrid's extra power and low-end push from the electric motor make it feel much more responsive. When we tested the plug-in hybrid model, it zipped to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds at our test track.
