In each season I will select an organ and will talk about most common conditions that affect that part. I will talk about why that condition happens, diagnosis, investigations, complications, treatment and outcome of that disease. A simple to understand explanation of the most common hernia in humans. Inguinal hernias are more common in men than in women. These hernias can also happen in children. These come out of a weakness in the groin called the inguinal canal which is a tunnel like structure that extends between the opening in the deep muscles of the groin called the deep inguinal ring and an opening in the superficial muscles called the superficial inguinal ring. This canal contains the spermatic cord and a nerve in men and the round ligament and nerve in women. As the spermatic cord is a much bigger structure than the round ligament, the inguinal canal is more open and larger in men as compared with women. This is the reason that these hernias are more common in men. Surgery is the treatment for these hernias. Obstruction and strangulation are the common complications of these hernias. These are a common cause of lumps in the groin. You should always seek medical advice is you feel a lump in your groin. surgery for these hernias can be performed either with an open incision in the groin or with a keyhole approach, both of these give good success rate.
