Song Info Artist: Pat Metheny Group Source: Still Life (Talking) (Album, 1987) Genre: Jazz Fusion Whilst Still Life (Talking) was the band’s fifth album, it was their first with new label Geffen Records after their departure from renowned jazz label ECM. The album, with its marked influence from South American percussion, punctuated by the addition of Brazilian percussionist Armando Marçal, has many songs that are fan favourites and it was awarded a Grammy award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance in 1988. Pat Metheny was born in Missouri in 1954 to a musical family. He started playing trumpet with his brother at an early age, but later switched to guitar. After meeting well-known figures in the jazz scene, Metheny went on to teach guitar at university, whilst establishing himself as a musical prodigy. Since the release of his first solo recording Bright Size Life in 1976, Metheny ha s pushed the boundaries of the jazz genre by incorporating new technology and expanding the improvisational and sonic capabilities of the guitar. In conjunction with his ensemble Pat Metheny Group, which he established in the late ‘70s, he has achieved great commercial and critical success, having won over twenty Grammy Awards and selling more than 1 million albums worldwide. ■ All candidates should ensure they bring their own Grade syllabus book to the exam or have proof of digital purchase ready to show the examiner.
