Talking about music is really, really hard. It's been likened to “dancing about architecture”, which I think is a great quote, allegedly by Frank Zappa. It must be immensely scary as a director to give a composer your film to work on. Music has an immense power to change the way we feel and can completely influence our perception of what we are seeing on screen. Directors, obviously, have a huge emotional bond with their work. Scoring a film is a bit like clothing the director's baby – we can dress it in ways that can completely change its character or its meaning - that's very scary from our point of view as composers too! In this video, I'm going to unpack what it is that can really, help directors and composers to have a good, meaningful dialogue, how to build trust and and how directors can get the best out of their composers for their film.
