In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Mir Osman Ali Khan (1886-1967) was the last Nizam (ruler) of the Princely State of Hyderabad, which was one of the largest and most important princely states in India before independence. He was born in Hyderabad and succeeded his father as Nizam in 1911. Mir Osman Ali Khan was known for his wealth, which was estimated to be the highest of any individual in the world at the time. He was often referred to as the "richest man in the world" during his lifetime. After India gained independence in 1947, the Nizam initially refused to accede to India, which led to the Hyderabad State's annexation by India in a military operation known as Operation Polo. Mir Osman Ali Khan subsequently agreed to join the Indian Union and served as the Rajpramukh (governor) of Hyderabad state from 1950 to 1956. He passed away in 1967.
