Eye Stye (Hordeolum) | Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & At Home Treatments Eye Styes (also known as Hordeolum) are acute bacterial infections of the eyelid. There are two types of hordeolum: external and internal, both of which have different symptoms. Styes are caused by a “clogged” or “blocked” gland on the eyelid margin, leading to build of glandular product, and subsequent secondary bacterial infection.
