(27 Nov 2018) A municipal council member kidnapped by suspected Islamic State group militants in south-eastern Libya late last week has managed to escape his captors and reach safety. Hussein Mohammed was able to talk about his ordeal on Tuesday, a day after he managed to evade captivity. Mohammed was one of a group of almost 20 who were seized by the militants after they attacked a police station in the oasis town of Tazirbu on Friday. At least eight civilians and two police officers were killed in the attack, which left 11 others injured. Most of those abducted by the militants were members of the Tazirbu municipal council. Mohammed said an armed group wearing military uniforms had stopped them as they were making their way to a meeting. Identifying themselves as members of the Libyan National Army, they forced them to ride in their cars. Soon after, Mohammed and the others realised that the men were in fact militants and they had been abducted. The UN's mission to Libya has condemned Friday's attack, and called for the immediate release of the kidnapped and their safe return to their families. It said that conflicting parties in Libya should set their differences aside "to defeat the terrorist threat" in Libya and protect civilians in compliance with international humanitarian law. Libya plunged into chaos after its 2011 Arab Spring uprising.
