Tafsir al-Jalalayn (Arabic: تفسير الجلالين, lit. "Tafsir of the two Jalals") is a classical Sunni interpretation of the Quran, renowned for being one of the most concise and accessible commentaries in Islamic literature. It is widely used as a standard introductory text for students of knowledge due to its straightforward style and one-volume length. Authorship and History The work is named after its two authors, both named Jalal al-Din: Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 1459): He began the commentary, writing from Surah al-Kahf to the end of the Quran (Surah al-Nas), and also completed the tafsir for Surah al-Fatiha. Jalal al-Din as-Suyuti (d. 1505): A student of al-Mahalli and a prolific scholar, he completed the remaining half (from Surah al-Baqarah to Surah al-Isra) in just 40 days following his teacher's death. Key Features Conciseness: It avoids lengthy digressions, focusing strictly on explaining ambiguous words or clarifying the literal meaning of the text. Integration: The commentary is often printed in the margins of the Quran, fitting seamlessly between verses to provide an uninterrupted reading flow. Methodology: It typically provides synonyms for difficult words, mentions Asbab al-Nuzul (occasions of revelation), and briefly touches upon legal rulings (primarily from the Shafi'i school) and linguistic analysis (i'rab). Accessibility: Because it is the shortest of the major classical tafsirs, it serves as the "essential first step" for millions of students worldwide.
