The Bull Temple in Bangalore, also known as Dodda Basavana Gudi, is a historic 16th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Nandi, Lord Shiva's sacred bull. It is famous for its massive, monolithic granite statue of Nandi, one of the largest in the world, and its Dravidian architecture. Located in the Basavanagudi area, it was founded by Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bangalore. History and significance Founder: The temple was built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I. Dedication: It is dedicated to Nandi, the celestial bull and mount of Lord Shiva. Legend: According to legend, a bull used to destroy groundnut crops, prompting local farmers to build the temple. A trident was placed on its head to stop the growing bull statue from getting bigger. Architecture and features Nandi statue: The main attraction is a huge, monolithic statue of Nandi, carved from a single piece of granite. It stands approximately 4.5 meters high and 6.5 meters long. Architectural style: The temple's original structure exhibits the Vijayanagara style, with the current tower added in the early 20th century featuring Saivite motifs.
