This song is always relevant, but seems particularly appropriate in today’s world. I wore red & blue to represent myself as an American woman & I played darbuka/tabla & congas to represent marginalized communities/victims. I’m American born & raised, but I’m also Egyptian by blood. I also didn’t tamper with the lyrics (aside from censorship) as to spotlight the original context of the song which is Michael Jackson’s story being a black male in America. I also have found the lyrics relatable as a woman. I deeply admire the way MJ was so blunt with his views & never held back sonically when it came to his music with more intense subject matter. This is dedicated to anyone who has been impacted by the insane amounts of injustice going on & I want to help in the best way I can which is through music.
