(English version on the bottom) Egy kis kulisszatitok: Ezen a versenyen nemzetkozi ertelemben ujonckent vehettem reszt. A 3-as palyat kaptam, Pulai Imre jott mellettem a 4-esen. Nagyon eros mezony jott ossze tobbszoros olimpiai es vilagbajnokokkal. Meg a parton melegitettem amikor Kati neni oda mondta nekem hatarozottan a kovetkezo instrukciot: Endre! Ugy menj mintha 500 metert mennel! Ezzel ennyiben is maradtunk. Nagyon tiszteltem es szerettem vele edzeni, szoval maximalisan vegre akartam hajtani amit mondott. Jol bemelegitettem es bealltam a mezonnyel egyutt a rajtvonalra. Elrajtoltunk es tenyleg 500 m-es tavhoz illo iramot diktaltam. 500 -nal en jottem at eloszor, Sumak innen kezdte atvenni a vezetest, a tobbiek igen csak le voltak maradva. A little behind-the-scenes story: At this competition, I was able to take part as a newcomer in the international field. I was in very good shape and could compete without any real pressure, although of course I felt a strong desire to prove myself, as this was my first racing season with my new coach, Kati néni (Fabianne). I successfully made it through both my heat and semifinal, and then prepared for the final. I was given lane 3, with Sumak (Imre Pulai) next to me in lane 4. It was an extremely strong field, with multiple olympic and world champions. I was warming up on the shore when Kati néni firmly called out one clear instruction: “Endre! Go as if you were racing 500 metres!” And that was that. I respected her deeply and loved training with her, so I was determined to execute exactly what she wanted. I warmed up properly and lined up at the start line with the other competitors. We set off, and I really dictated a pace worthy of a 500m race. At the 500m mark, I was the first to pass through it as my trainer wanted. From about 600m Sumak began to take the lead, while the others were already quite far behind. I think my very strong start may have surprised him. I still had some energy left in me, but I could feel that from that point on it would be incredibly tough if I wanted to hold my position — and I did want to hold it. As I reached the last 200 metres, I was still paddling steadily close behind Sumak, but I was reaching my limit physically. Blurred spots appeared before my eyes, actually I saw fog in front of me and even though my strength was fading, but I was trying to keep my stroke rate up. I was completely exhausted, but I had a strong feeling that no one behind me should beat me now — and I needed those scalps. In the end, I managed to cross the finish line in second place. The final stretch of that 1000 metres hurt badly, but afterwards it felt amazing to know that I had completely fulfilled my target. Result: 1. Imre Pulai 2. Endre Ipacs 3. Nikolai Buhalov 4. Ivan Klementjev
