Construction of the South Fremantle Power Station began in January 1946 and it would take six years before it was completed. The Minister of Electricity, David Brand, official opened the power station in January 1951. Despite a lack of resources due to the effects of World War 2 that was felt for a long time with materials being substituted where possible, a number of complications arose during the construction years including: numerous stop work meetings addressing work and pay issues a fire severely damaging the electric motor of the 7-ton crane on the 80ft staging and a number of workplace injuries. With the South Fremantle Power Station coming online and connecting with the East Perth Power Station, residents of the Perth metropolitan area would see their power increased from 40kW to 50kW, in line with the rest of the world. Although there were certainly far more shortages and power cuts, they did occur from time to time, particularly with break downs and incidents from fire and equipment faults. The South Fremantle Power Station closed in September 1985 after 35 years of service. For the past 39 years, it's remained somewhat 'abandoned', although a hotspot for thousands of people over the years from skaters, motorbike riders, graffers, film crews, rock concerts, urbexers, thrill seekers and those who want to experience the fascinating place. Sadly, that's 39 years of Western Australian Government inaction, something the people of Perth have certainly grown accustomed to. Politicians come and go, armed with all their BS good-intentions but like many vacant places in Perth, keep pissing in the wind as they continue to let the decay take its toll on the building. In 2022, it was clear the cracks in the concrete floors and ceilings were becoming worse, judging from past photos over the decades. It's hardly surprising with the lack of maintenance of care and will certainly continue its degradation until it's too late.
