(27 Jan 2006) SHOTLIST 1. Major Andrew Elmes, spokesperson for ISAF coming out of building 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Major Andrew Elmes, spokesperson for ISAF "Well ISAF's overall commitment to the south is expected to number some six-thousand troops, maybe more, and this is a very fundamental part of it. We already have Canada committed to the south as part of operation Enduring Freedom at the moment, but expecting to come under the ISAF umbrella. This now shows that Britain is part of that same strategic plan. We're going to see an overall increase of troops under the provincial reconstruction team structure and with security assets to operate in the south, to extend the authority of the government and to provide security assistance in the south, just as we are now doing in the north and the west under the ISAF United Nations mandate" 3. Britain's decision came as it was to take control of NATO's three-year mission in southern provinces where international forces have been targeted by suicide bombers. British force levels in Afghanistan would peak at around 57-hundred before dropping to around 47-hundred, after engineers had completed building bases by July, Defence Secretary John Reid told members of parliament on Thursday. An ISAF spokesman in Kabul said that the force's overall commitment to the south was expected to number some six-thousand troops or more. Major Andrew Elmes added the increasing troop numbers in the south would "extend the authority of the government". This year has been the deadliest in Afghanistan since US-led forces ousted the Taliban in 2001 for harbouring Osama bin Laden. Fighting has killed more than 15-hundred people.
