A winter blizzard sweeps across the frozen river as I walk along the forested bank, pulling my sled through the snow. Visibility is low, and the wild feels completely empty — except for the animals caught on my trail cameras deep in the forest. I return to the old stone house I’ve been restoring. This time I bring glass panels to finally install real windows. Now I can sit inside, warm by the stove, and watch the frozen river and silent forest without stepping outside. After preparing firewood and hanging simple curtains, I head to the river. I clear the ice and cut a deep ice hole. I’ve practiced winter swimming for over 10 years, and the cold water gives me strength and clarity. Back in the house, I warm up by the stove, drink hot tea, and cook a simple meal — ribs, potatoes, and flour soup over the fire. Fed and warmed, I fall asleep alone in the wilderness.
