What started as a normal Saturday morning of railfanning in Mendota, Illinois quickly turned into one of the rarest trains I’ve ever caught here. After catching Amtrak’s Carl Sandburg and meeting the Illinois Zephyr at the Mendota Amtrak Station, an unexpected Union Pacific freight rolled through — completely unplanned. I had my DJI Mini 4K drone ready, but there was no time to launch. Instead, I captured the moment by hand as the Union Pacific freight rumbled east through Mendota.
