When the word law is mentioned, every one of us thinks about something strong, unchanging and rigid. Something that doesn’t depend on values or ideologies. Is it really like that? I will be talking about the public values of our society and the new Slovak civil code. I have chosen this theme because of the current state of the legislative process, concerning our new civil code. There is no doubt this setting reflects not only the “fresh” sociological and legal issues, but it is also is based on historic context, in both positive and negative light. We are facing legal and political challenges in the preparation of such extensive legislation as the civil code. On the one hand, we should respect the public values of our country, but on the other, we are able to shape the public setting by law. This task is certainly not easy. Our goal is to prepare a legislation suitable for practical life – a modern codex of private law, that will (finally) advance us to fit in with other developed European countries. Few people, not counting the legal community, are aware of the fact, that they get in contact with the civil law standards every day. You just need to get in your car and go shopping... This law shapes our rights, our responsibilities, as it can easily get us into trouble. If we don’t understand it, we can lose the roof above our heads. It is said that ignorance of the law is no excuse, but do not worry, I will be happy to sum up everything important you need to know about these new changes to our legislation. Marek Števček is a lawyer and a university pedagogue. He is one of the most important civil law experts in civil and procedural law in Slovakia. Since 1999 he has been lecturing at the Department of civil law at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava. He served as a judge, general director at the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak republic, and vice-rector of the Comenius University for legislation. Since 2019 he has been leading the university as a vice-rector and at the same time working on a draft of the new Slovak Civil code. If he is not currently awarding an honorary doctorate, signing a memorandum or chairing one of the dozens of commissions, he partakes in sports. In addition to boxing, he is a big fan of quality rock and opera music, and the classic German philosopher Immanuel Kant.
