A late night junction from the Paramount Comedy Channel at the start of 2001, from just before they began daytime transmissions, and what I'm pretty sure would be the last proper junction before they would shut up shop for the night. As can probably be deciphered from the late slot, this is broadcast between two broadly unsuccessful sitcoms, Jenny - which starred MTV's Jenny McCarthy and aired in 1997 on NBC, as part of a glut of new sitcoms they launched in the 1997-98 television season, presumably to capitalise on the success of Friends, Frasier and Seinfeld, which they aired, as well as the likes of 3rd Rock from the Sun, Caroline in the City and Suddenly Susan. The other new shows launched by NBC that month were Built to Last, which as it turns out was only built to last under a month, For Your Love which lasted 2 months but found refuge on The WB where it had 4 more seasons, House Rules which was dumped after 5 episodes, LateLine which lasted 2 seasons with the last few episodes shoved to (CBS sibling) cable network Showtime, BBC series Stressed Eric, The Tony Danza Show which had 5 episodes unaired, Union Square, created by Fred "My Family" Barron which got good ratings but was critically savaged. Jenny was one of three failed attempts by MTV to break into network television that season, the others being a spy drama on The WB called "Three", and the next programme after Jenny, Hitz - a UPN sitcom that didn't even finish a whole season in the same year - and also carried that "MTV in space" logo. And for some reason, MTV's Cartoon Sushi? Corporate synergy, everyone. I have about eight hours of Paramount on this particular tape, much of which comes from 3am airings of It's Garry Shandling's Show, which Jenny replaced presumably very late in the era when it was timesharing with Nickelodeon. The ident used into Hitz is very dominant on this tape and is used into every Shandling episode. It does get a bit boring seeing the same ident every time, but at least I do have so much of the channel.
