Within the Kuril islands of Russia is a massive volcanic island which is surrounded by another island. In essence, the Tao Rusyr caldera is an island within an island, and represents the site of one of the planet's largest explosive eruptions in the last 10,000 years. This eruption left behind a 7.5 kilometer wide caldera, from which a new volcanic cone grew out of. The aforementioned volcanic cone is still active as it last erupted in 1952.
