Heart catheterization is used to diagnose a blocked artery. Depending on the number and location of blockages, treatment may involve medication, open heart surgery or repair with a balloon and stent. Talal Attar, an interventional cardiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explains that this last treatment option is done at the same time as the diagnostic catheterization. Dr. Attar says catheterization does not require general anesthesia and is not considered surgery. Instead, patients receive a sedative to ease anxiety and a catheter is placed into an artery in the groin, or more commonly today, in the wrist, and threaded to the heart so a camera can look for any blockages. The patient feels no pain or discomfort. A diagnostic heart catheterization takes 20-30 minutes. If repair is also done at the same time, it requires an additional 45 minutes. Most patients can go home following a few hours of observation at the hospital. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call (614) 685-8800 or visit http://wexnermedical.osu.edu/patient-...
