The Living World _(NEET/NCERT aligned) The living world includes all organisms present on Earth—plants, animals, microorganisms, and humans. These organisms show a wide diversity in form, structure, function, and habitat, yet they share certain common characteristics that distinguish them from non-living things. Characteristics of Living Organisms Growth – Living organisms grow by cell division (internal growth), unlike non-living objects. Reproduction – Ability to produce offspring (sexual or asexual). Though some organisms may not reproduce, it is a key feature of life. Metabolism – All biochemical reactions (anabolism and catabolism) occurring inside a living body. This is the most defining feature of life. Consciousness – Ability to sense and respond to stimuli (light, temperature, chemicals, etc.). Cellular Organization – All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. Life Span – Every organism has a definite life cycle: birth, growth, maturity, senescence, and death. Diversity in the Living World Due to enormous diversity, organisms are identified, named, and classified systematically to study them easily. Taxonomy – Science of identification, nomenclature, and classification of organisms. Nomenclature – Scientific naming of organisms (Binomial nomenclature by Carolus Linnaeus). Classification – Grouping organisms based on similarities and differences. Importance of Classification Makes study of organisms easy and systematic Helps in understanding evolutionary relationships Avoids confusion caused by local/common names Taxonomic Categories Species → Genus → Family → Order → Class → Phylum/Division → Kingdom
