If we only cared about fitness, we'd run 5k or 10k. But we do it to be alone on the trail trail against the backdrop of immense human support. In our heads we are the myth of the cowboy but the truth is that we're far from it. We are completely alone with our fitness, lost in our minds, and at the same time we're surrounded by the most supportive community in sports.
