A Charming Walking Tour of Calasparra Spain, the CITY OF RICE!

Today we take a walking tour in the beautiful town of Calasparra in the Murcia region of Spain. The regions rich history, including cave paintings from around the year 3,000 BC and the towns 12th century Arab castle, leave us with a sense of wonder of all who have gone before. Rice production is one of the attractions of this municipality and the quality of its varieties has given Calasparra Rice worldwide fame. It is known as the first rice in Spain with 'Designation of Origin'. This gives the town its nickname 'City of Rice'. Our walking tour begins on the edge of town as we make our way though the ancient streets to the central Plaza. After viewing many of the Calasparra sights and main attractions we head up the hill to the Calasparra castle to get a birds eye-view of the town and surrounding landscapes. To end our tour we take a short 5.6km drive out of town to explore the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, a beautiful location excavated in the rock on the banks of the Segura River.
