Shaming is so prevalent across the world, it's taught to us as children, even, but often masked as other things (polite, decent, respectable). Yet the lessons are still taught, through snide remarks (aka being labelled "fast"), controlling clothing, controlling who you can/can't be friends with all the way to what popstar you're even allowed to listen to (remember the panic about Britney Spears?). It's closely tied to purity culture, which has seeped into much of the western world, even if people haven't been raised as religious, it's lessons, in particular around controlling women's bodies, are all around us.
