🤰A pregnancy, that should bring joy can sometime turn into a medical catastrophic event. One of the dreaded complications of pregnancy is an ectopic pregnancy.It is a condition where the fertilised egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube. 🩸The fallopian tube can’t expand beyond a particular limit and may burst causing massive bleeding inside the abdomen which can be even fatal, if not attended to urgently. Last week, I operated two, back to back cases of ruptured ectopic pregnancy and both women were saved due to prompt surgical intervention. ❓Why does an ectopic pregnancy happen? Factors like previous pelvic infections, endometriosis, tubal surgeries, smoking, or certain fertility treatments can increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. However, sometimes, it happens without any known cause. 🪧What are the signs and symptoms? Missed periods with positive pregnancy test with pain lower abdomen, bleeding from vagina and pregnancy not showing up in the uterus on the ultrasound. 👩🏻‍⚕️How Is It Treated? If detected early, a medication called Injection Methotrexate can be given to arrest the growth of pregnancy and to avert the further complications . However this treatment may not work always and the patient may require a surgical treatment The success rate of future pregnancies depends on early detection and timely treatment. ✅ The good news?
