(6 Jun 2019) Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday announced a new policy aimed at preventing Venezuelans without humanitarian visas from entering the country. Vizcarra made his comments as he watched as 50 Venezuelans declared criminal elements boarded a Peruvian Air Force transport plane in Lima headed for Venezuela. The president announced that as of 15 June all Venezuelan migrants must have a humanitarian visa and a valid passport to be able to enter Peru. This is the third time in two months that Peru has returned so-called criminal elements, 140 people in total, back to Venezuela. More than 3 million Venezuelans, or one-tenth of the population, have left the crisis-wracked country, where a political struggle is now playing out between US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido and socialist President Nicolas Maduro. Peru is the second country, after Colombia, used as a destination for Venezuelan migrants fleeing the crisis. So far some 490,000 Venezuelans have been granted temporary residence permits in neighbouring countries.
