Cypripedium flavum is a rare orchid confined to the southwestern mountains of China at high elevations - between 2,500-3,500 meters. Here it grows alongside many other Cypripedium species as well as various orchids such as Phaius delavayi, Ponerorchis chusua, and Oreorchis nana. This plant, though plentiful where it grows, has a questionable future due not only to collecting pressure from plant diggers, but also from climate change. The Tibetan Plateau is warming rapidly and as its icy burden melts away vast changes to the southern Asian climate are almost inevitable. Can this plant adapt? Time will tell. For now it is somewhat secure in a number of nature reserves, including Huanglong National Park - a featured place in this video.
