Three dams were built to power sawmills, grist mills, and other industries starting in 1839. In 1847 after a county-wide referendum, the county seat was moved from Prairie du Sac to the Baraboo River Valley where a new village was platted by the county board and named Adams. At the same time, mill and dam owner George Brown had a village platted next to Adams and named it Baraboo. The unique name eventually won the day and both plats were combined with that name. Yankee settlers built a community with the architecture and institutions they knew from back east. The community was centered on a public square around which stores, hotels, and other businesses were established. THIS IS PART 2 OF A THREE PART SERIES.
