This legendary issue, with a cover date of March 1963, gave Spider-Man his very first solo spotlight after debuting in Amazing Fantasy #15 — and it completely changed comic book history. Created by the incredible team of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko (with cover art contributions by Jack Kirby), this issue set the foundation for everything we love about Spider-Man today. The comic features two classic stories. In the first, Spider-Man tries to join the Fantastic Four — but things don’t go as planned. Instead of becoming part of the team, he ends up proving himself by saving a group of astronauts, hoping to win public respect. In the second story, he faces his very first super-villain, the mysterious Chameleon. This issue also introduced one of the most iconic characters in Spider-Man history — J. Jonah Jameson — along with his son John Jameson. From that moment on, Spider-Man wasn’t just fighting villains… he was fighting bad press too! What makes this comic my favorite is how it defined Peter Parker as something completely different from other heroes of the time. He wasn’t rich. He wasn’t perfect. He struggled with money, worried about his aunt’s health, and dealt with everyday problems — all while trying to be a superhero. That balance between real life and hero life is what made Spider-Man feel human… and that’s why he’s still my favorite retro superhero today.
