I've just taken this adorable baby stoat (known as a short-tailed weasel in the US) into my care and so far he's doing really well. ABOUT THIS FILM ____________________ To the rescue I was in my hide photographing foxes for a new painting project when I received an emergency call from some people living in Wakefield: they had found a baby stoat abandoned. There was no time to waste. Stoat kits are tiny and they can get cold and become dehydrated very quickly, so I set off that very evening to pick up the stoat. A male When I got there it was clear the people who found this stoat had taken great care of him. He was nice an warm. On a quick inspection I could see he is a male, roughly six weeks old. First feed After checking the stoat was warm, I set about offering him a drink. I could tell he was slightly dehydrated because when I pinched the skin on his neck it didn't bounce back instantly. I offered him puppy milk via a pipette and he immediately tucked in. This is a great sign, since it can be very difficult feeding very young stoats - a drop too fast can drown them! Since he took to the milk so well, I decided to feed him too. And he was straight in, demolishing a tiny chicken leg in minutes. First night After his first feed, it was time to settle him in for the night. I placed a heat mat under the shoebox he arrived in, but only placed it half way so that if he got too warm during the night he could move to the cooler side. Then I left him to sleep, but I will be checking on him every three hours during his first nights.
