Can a killing ever be humane? Passed in 1958 amidst intense public pressure, the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act set out to reform and regulate the slaughter of animals for human consumption. This presentation traces the Act’s legislative origins, from congressional visits to slaughterhouses and studies of animal experiences of fear and pain, to the compromises that were struck with industrial producers, animal advocates, and religious groups. It explores the legal and ethical tensions embedded in the language of the Act, including definitions of “humane” and “suffering.” Examining the legal challenges to the Act and issues with enforcement, as well as what the Act does and does not cover, the presentation raises a broader question: is it possible to humanely slaughter animals? 00:00 Opening Credits 00:35 Table of Contents 00:48 Introduction 03:38 Why Did Congress Want to Adopt Legislation on Slaughter? 11:53 Religious Slaughter 13:41 First Draft of the Bill 17:19 Final Draft of the Bill 25:40 What's at Stake for the Animals? 35:33 Legal Challenges 42:57 Issues in Practice 45:37 Conclusion https://thebrooksinstitute.org/resour...
