Edward Earl Johnson was executed on May 20, 1987, in the gas chamber at Mississippi State Penitentiary. He was only 18 years old when he was convicted of killing town marshal Jake Trest and attacking an elderly woman in Walnut Grove, Mississippi. From the moment of his arrest, Johnson maintained his innocence. He claimed that his confession was forced under torture and that he was condemned simply because of the color of his skin. There was no physical evidence linking him to the crime — no DNA, no fingerprints, no eyewitnesses. His trial took place before an all-white jury in a racially divided community. The BBC documentary “Fourteen Days in May” followed his final two weeks on death row, showing a calm and intelligent man who never stopped saying he was innocent. Minutes before his execution, Edward said: “I didn’t kill them, but I’m Black — and that’s enough to condemn me.” He died at 12:06 a.m., still declaring: “I am innocent.” For some, his death brought justice for the murdered marshal. For others, it exposed the deep racial wounds of the American South — and the terrifying possibility that an innocent man was executed. #EdwardEarlJohnson #DeathRow #Execution #TrueCrime #FinalSentence #Mississippi #GasChamber #WrongfulConviction #RacialInjustice #FourteenDaysInMay #ControversialExecution #DeathPenalty
