In this behind-the-scenes video, Brandon Stieg of Element Artworks walks us through the full creative process of crafting a custom-forged steel ram skull sculpture—from concept to completion. The project, inspired by the rich symbolism of ram skulls across cultures (strength, vitality, fertility), begins with research and design sketches, followed by rough shaping in poplar wood to create a foundational form. Brandon then builds a steel framework using plate metal, spheres, and forged components, gradually layering in complexity with MIG brazing and detailed shaping techniques. Throughout the video, we see Brandon heat, shape, and weld steel and bronze elements, using everything from propane forges to pneumatic nibblers and metal cutting, forming and shaping tools to form both the structure and surface textures—especially on the iconic ram horns. He applies a Sculpt Nouveau antiquing patina for high contrast, revealing a deep, darkened skull with highlighted bronze ridges for dramatic effect. As the project evolves, Brandon reflects on how the artistic process often diverges from the original plan, leading to new discoveries in form and finish. The result is a striking fusion of ancient and modern aesthetics—a gritty, powerful piece that feels like it emerged from a mythical battlefield. Brandon invites viewers to follow the journey, share feedback, and subscribe for more creative builds.
