Learn how deposit return systems work and how they can help solve plastic pollution from beverage packaging waste. With collection and subsequent recycling rates of 90% and above, deposit return systems (DRS) ensure the materials used to make beverage packaging can be used again and again (including food-grade quality products). But how do they work? In this video, we explain the various ways a deposit return scheme (also known as bottle bills or container deposit) can be designed to work seamlessly between beverage distributors, retailers, system operators, and consumers. For example, did you know the DRS barcode indicates to the system which material type, container size, and deposit value each container has? The barcode information also creates greater system transparency by enabling performance data. Moreover, we explain how a deposit return system is financed through three main sources of revenue, including: Unredeemed deposits from containers that are not delivered back to the store The revenue from the sale of collected containers A small fee paid by beverage producers, known as an extended producer responsibility fee In this way, a deposit return system does not require government funding, which makes it feasible for all countries to implement and reap the rewards.
