🇰🇷🇦🇪With 1004 Gourmet and Lamise K-Beauty, husband-and-wife duo Chang Sup Shin and Kate Wooyeon Park have built two well-established, UAE-born Korean brands. 🤝 The clearest —and most unexpected— validation of Park and Shin’s authenticity-led business leadership so far came in November last year when, during South Korean President Jaemyung Lee’s official visit to the UAE, the First Lady Hyekyung Kim acknowledged their work during an event at Abu Dhabi’s Korean Cultural Center. 🌊 All along, a euphoric cultural shift has unfolded in parallel: the rise of the Korean Wave, or Hallyu (한류). What began in the late 1990s as regional interest in Korean TV dramas and pop music has since evolved into a global force shaping food, fashion, beauty, language, cinema, and consumer behaviour. ⚠️ But rapid growth comes with businesses quick to chase the trend. “Right now, everyone is jumping into the Korean beauty space because it’s easy to enter,” Park says. “What I’m seeing instead is a price battle—products being pushed cheaper and cheaper. As a Korean, that worries me, because it starts to position K-beauty as ‘cheap’, rather than considered or trustworthy. Reputation matters—not just here, but back in Korea too.” 🧭 “There’s a difference between appreciation and appropriation, and often it comes down to intention and effort,” adds Shin. “If a brand is simply putting Korean characters on packaging, or misusing symbols like the Korean flag without understanding what they mean, that doesn’t feel respectful…” 🎙️ In this episode of 𝗔𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁, the entrepreneurial couple speak with our Features Editor Aalia Mehreen Ahmed 🍉 on what the responsibility of representing one’s nation entails, what they’ve learnt about each other by running a business together, and much more! 📜 Read a more in-depth take on their journey HERE: https://mena.entrepreneur.com/busines...
