A young drummer learns how to play lead djembe. He is taught by elders, and also blessed by Bala Fasseke, the personal Griot of Sundiata, 13th century founder of the Mali empire. THIS VIDEO BEGINS WITH BALA FASSEKE AND THE YOUNG DRUMMER ARRIVING IN THE SACRED FOREST, WHERE HE WILL REQUEST & RECEIVE A #DJEMBE LESSON FROM THE MASTER MUSICIANS. ---- Learn from the very best, and emulate every aspect of their performance style! ---- ^Imitation is the highest form of flattery^ This is the final scene from the first half of Les Ballets Africains "HERITAGE" production, just prior to the intermission. In order to fully understand what is happening, it will be helpful to read the liner notes' description of events preceding this video excerpt... "When everyone is gathered, they begin the dance of the Totems. Each family chief wears a mask that represents the totem of his particular family (the animal which is identified with each of the great families). The Kourouma family links with the panther, the Keita family with the lion, the Traore family with the chimpanzee, and the Conde family with the bull. "At the moment that the dance gained its greatest intensity, a young drummer, caught up in the excitement of the moment, intrudes with a solo that confuses the dancers and makes the musicians lose their rhythm. Despite the obvious displeasure of everyone present, he insists on continuing with his ridiculous antics. Everybody leaves the square in disgust. When he finally realizes that he is responsible for ending the celebration, he is mortified. He bends down to recover his drum, which the furious dancers had torn from his hands and thrown to the ground. "At the same moment, he hears the sound of the Koni (traditional guitar) played by Bala Fasseke, who sings a song of encouragement to the young musician and offers to take him to the Sacred Forest for instruction from the great Master Musicians. The youth, full of remorse, agrees to accompany the wise Griot."
