In our day to day practice, 3 sets of doctors primarily take care of bone health, one is endocrinologist, second one is your orthopaedic surgeons and third is rheumatologists. So the bulk of the patients who need care for bone health do not have any rare problems related to bone, they have fragility which is age related, because of the passage of time their bone becomes weak and they need care for the same or it could be because of bone mineral deficiencies because these are number 1 and number 2 causes for bone fragility , is actually endocrine in nature, which is either old age or deficiencies. It could be either because of dietary or rarer endocrine diseases. So most of the osteoporosis patients or bone disease patients have to see an endocrinologist. Orthopaedic surgeons see rarer patients who have rarer manifestations, but have more severe manifestations, namely those patients who have had fractures in the past, those patients who have had fractures while they are on treatment etc and they mainly deal with the surgical aspects of bone fragility and how the can be managed and when it comes to rheumatologists or immunologists, they take care of patients who have very high risk of bone fragility and they also take care of patients who have very high risk of bone fragility an because of that they also get involved in managing patients with osteoporosis. For example it is well established that rheumatoid arthritis and the treatment of all rheumatological conditions namely exogenous glucocorticoids are a major risk factor for osteoporosis. So rheumatologist are also involved in managing many patients with osteoporosis but for the vast majority of patients who are having bone disorders, an endocrinologist would be a good choice to start with. If you are worried about bone related illness from affecting you later in your life, you are better off meeting an endocrinologist directly.
