This past quail season was a lot of fun. I was lucky to hunt with several of my good friends. My older dog, Dot, had some memorable finds and my new dog, Lily, really shined. I caught a lot of neat clips throughout the season so it was hard picking just twelve. 12. Dot’s Sunflower Covey - This clip was shot the day before Thanksgiving. Dot’s had some health struggles but she had a really productive year. This clip made the list for two reasons. First, a covey went out wild near where Dot went on point and I mistakenly thought she was pointing their scent so I was pleasantly surprised when these birds took flight. Second, you can really see the nature of the cover this year due to the seven foot tall sunflowers that impede my shot. Fun stuff. 11. Lily and Gracie’s Usual Place Covey - This clip was also shot the week of Thanksgiving and made the list as much because of who I was with as what I captured. Brad’s a long time friend whom I get to hunt with only occasionally. We usually go to this location and find birds just as we did here. Again you can see the unusually high bluestem grass as a result of the plentiful summer rains. 10. Lily’s Overlook Covey - This was Lily’s first year with me and I couldn’t be more pleased with how things went. This clip was shot late in the season and made the list because she held these birds a really long time before I realized she was on point and they let us get right on top of them before flushing. Plus, the thicket sits right at the top of a big sandhill overlooking miles of great bobwhite habitat where I’ve made some wonderful memories. Great clip! 9. Dot’s Cottonwood Covey - Maybe this should be higher on my list. I love this clip. It shows what I do, and what I love, about as well as any I’ve captured through the years. Dot found these birds under an old, gnarly cottonwood tree and held them while I covered a decent distance to get to her. The resulting flush and retrieve make me smile everytime I watch the clip. 8. Cali’s Misfire Covey - This late season clip shows Ben’s Brittany, Cali, pointing a covey in some sumac thickets. I love hunting with Ben and get a great deal of pleasure in capturing video of his dog being successful. Again, these birds let us get wonderfully close before flushing making for a fun video. 7. Lily’s Snow Covey - We had a great plains blizzard move through in early January. A lot of people think quail hunting in the snow is easy. It’s not. The cold and exhaustion gave Lily a limp tail which stayed with her for two weeks. This clip makes the list because of the snow and the number of birds. What a wonderful covey in difficult conditions. 6. Lily’s Dammit Covey - January 27, 2024 was probably the best day of solo quail hunting I’ve ever had. This clip was one of five I captured that day. All but one of them made this list. Lily had these birds nailed in the middle of a sunflower covered sand flat. They flushed beautifully and I missed. Dammit! 5. Lily’s Perseverance Covey - Lily had these public land bobwhites pinned against all the down wood. I had a hard time finding her and when I did the birds were trapped between us. This makes for a spectacular flush and another whiff by the guy with the gun. Lily persisted and found me a late flusher so I could break my miss streak. Good dog! 4. Dot’s Opener - Shot opening weekend this clip makes the list for a couple reasons. First, I heard the birds chirping in the thicket while I waited for Ben to join me before the flush. Second, there’s just a LOT of them. A big covey like this makes one helluva racket when it flushes. I hope it excites you like it does me. 3. Lily’s Corner Covey - Another January 27 video. Lily was stacked up on this covey under the corner posts which was fun. The birds held really tight and flushed almost underfoot which was even more fun. A memorable covey from a dog that’s going to be a LOT of fun for a long time. 2. Lily’s First Covey - Lily found her first covey for me on opening day in November. What a spectacular covey it was! These birds were in a flat choked with thistles and let me get right on top of them. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen coveys this large. 1. Lily’s Double Day Covey - I don’t shoot as much as I used to. I rarely shoot doubles anymore. This clip is my favorite this year because it’s the best example of a covey rise double I’ve ever caught on film. Lily found these birds in a plum thicket and helped me find both my birds in the thick cover after the flush. A great clip for a great season.
