For centuries, the idea of witches gathering at night terrified much of Europe. Forest clearings. Secret rituals. A horned figure presiding over forbidden rites. Thousands were tortured and executed for confessing to attending these imagined gatherings. But what if the Sabbath itself was never real in the way it was feared? In this video, we explore how the Witches’ Sabbath was constructed, why it became one of the most powerful and deadly myths in European history, and what it reveals about deeper fears surrounding paganism, mythology, and alternative worldviews. Drawing on folklore, demonology, art, and historical scholarship, we trace how fragmentary night traditions, spirit journeys, and older pagan beliefs were reshaped into a single coherent image of evil that could be hunted, prosecuted, and destroyed. This is not a story about secret cults or devil worship. It is a story about fear. About authority losing control. About forms of knowledge rooted in experience, land, intuition, and memory rather than scripture or institution. And about why those ways of knowing have repeatedly been framed as dangerous across history. We look at how the Sabbath functioned as a mythological tool, turning suspicion into evidence and imagination into justification for violence. We examine why women, healers, and those closest to life, death, and the natural world were so often targeted. And we ask why ideas associated with pagan worldviews, ritual practice, and non-institutional power continue to unsettle even in the modern world. Finally, we explore what it means to say that witchcraft returns. Not as a survival of medieval superstition, and not as a single modern practice, but as a recurring human response to conditions of disconnection, loss of meaning, and dissatisfaction with inherited systems of authority. Different in form, different in language, but recognisable in what it offers and in what it challenges. This video is part of an ongoing exploration of mythology, fear, and worldview. Not just the myths people told, but the reasons they needed to tell them. Thanks for watching.
