Why don’t Americans trust scientific consensus? The roots of our attitude can be traced back to the Second Great Awakening during the early 19th century when the expertise of not only ministers but also lawyers, government officials, and medical doctors was frequently questioned. This “suspicion of expertise,” said UCLA sociologist Jeffrey Guhin, can be thought of as a dangerous side effect of the American idea of equality—when applied to intellectual ideas, it can lead to movements that, for example, distrust vaccinations. Guhin shared his insights at a Zócalo/Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County event titled “Are Americans Turning Against Science?” which took place at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
