In this video, we take a look at all the games developed (or co-developed in conjunction with other developers) by LucasArts! In the late 70s, flush with the success of the Star Wars movies, filmmaker George Lucas saw that video games were going to be a major entertainment outlet, and so created a studio for creating games. Originally the "Lucasfilm Computer Division" in 1979, the games portion of the group was officially turned into "LucasFilm Games" in 1982. Interestingly, the actual Star Wars license was held exclusively by Atari - meaning this new gaming Lucasfilm gaming group could NOT create any actual games based on the Star Wars property. So for the first 0 years of its existence, its developers focused on purely original non-Star Wars properties - with great success! In 1990, the group was renamed from Lucasfilm Games to the more familiar LucasArts. During their 30 years in service, LucasArts produced many absolutely wonderful games; right from the start with their early Atari/Commodore 64 releases (Rescue on Fractalus, The Eidolon, etc) - it was clear that this was a truly talented group of developers. They became masters of the adventure genre, giving us legendary titles like the Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island games. Once the exclusivity deal with Atari ended, they started producing games based on the Star Wars franchise and many of them are absolute classics in the gaming world (X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Rebel Assault, etc) As the 90s continued, they produced a mix of Star Wars licensed games, as well as original titles over a variety of genres and platforms (Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Herc's Adventures, etc) - and were almost all universally up to incredibly high standards of art and gameplay. LucasArts eventually became a publisher in its own right, publishing games developed by other studios, or occasionally even collaborating with other studios (e.g. Factor 5). The last game developed internally and released by LucasArts was The Force Unleashed II; the company was acquired (along with the rest of LucasFilm) by the Disney corporation which sadly shut LucasArts down in 2014. While gone now, LucasArts has left behind a very rich legacy that is massive part of gaming history!
