A bunch of big stuff gets real Apple Silicon support. Support for some pretty big players has officially arrived for Apple Silicon Macs this week, as if there was new hardware just around the corner that people might be likely to use for demanding applications like these. I don’t know, like and Apple Silicon, M1X iMac for example. But that is of course just baseless speculation of course. But just in case, we might as well have a look what’s here. Development platform Docker for people much smarter than me has moved out of it’s technical preview stage and into public release. Now, I don’t developer personally, but I don’t judge those who do, its a personal choice and that’s very much up to them. But 45,000 of these monster/ I mean developers have downloaded the technical preview and helped to squash those bugs so if this was something you were waiting for before pulling the trigger and moving over to Apple Silicon, now you can. But I wouldn’t until you see what happens on Tuesday. Just saying, it’s not long to wait. Parallels Next up - Parallels. Parallels has also been in public beta for quite some time, and again, in the past couple of day, it’s been released fully as Parallels Desktop 16. In case you’re not aware, parallels is a virtual machine system that allows you to run other operating systems within MacOS - so Windows for example, though there are some caveats. First, you can only run Windows on ARM, and although that has recently had x86 emulation for regular windows apps added, that is an emulation layer within Windows on ARM, not native support. In addition, Windows on ARM is only officially licensed to use on Microsoft hardware that it comes pre-installed on, so this is in effect is Anti-Hackintoshing. You’re putting unlicensed software onto your system which you’ll need to download from the Windows Insider preview platform, so don’t be surprised if there are issues and certainly don’t expect support from Microsoft with it right now. All that being said, the vast majority of people who want to run a different OS in a virtual machine are most likely tinkerers, and it can certainly be a rewarding idea. And of course, if Apple does announce new Macs on Tuesday, just after parallels brings their official support, there is a chance that Microsoft come out on stage and give their blessing by licensing the software for this, as they’ve worked with Apple already on brining Office to Apple Silicon natively already. I still don’t expect the option to dual boot on Apple Silicon probably ever though, Boot Camp is dead, so if you NEED Windows this is probably the best route. Finally Maxon has announced that Redshift is being launched for the Mac using Metal, including native support for Apple Silicon Macs as soon as Big Sur 11.3 is released. Which, as it mentions new iMacs in its beta code, might just be next week. Redshift, the award-winning, production-ready renderer, offers a rich feature set including ray switches, flexible shading networks, motion blur, AOVs, deep output, layered EXR and much more. Unlike other GPU renderers, Redshift is a biased renderer that enables artists to adjust the quality of individual techniques in order to get the best performance/quality balance for production. As a Universal solution, Redshift is optimized for high-end performance across both M1- and Intel-powered Macs. Redshift for macOS signifies a milestone, bringing cutting-edge cinematic rendering to Mac artists. And native support for M1-powered Macs means substantial efficiency improvements to workflows, since the integrated graphics in M1 provide a huge increase in graphics performance combined with low power consumption. “When Redshift joined the Maxon family in 2019, extending support to our user community on the Mac platform was a top priority,” says Maxon CEO, David McGavran. “So we’re thrilled that creatives working in macOS environments can now take advantage of this powerful and flexible GPU-accelerated renderer built to meet the specific demands of contemporary high-end production.” And if that sounded like a press release, its because it literally was. Because, like with Docker, I’m not smart enough to understand this stuff, and that’s why iCaveDave reccomends RenderBoi Apple Silicon, because he is smart.
