We begin by removing the old battens, clearing the way to install the new Douglas fir boards directly onto the original beams. Once the base is secure, the roofers manage to board the entire east side, followed by laying the lining and fixing the new battens over the top, ready for tiling. 🪵 Preparing the Roof for Tiles With the structure rebuilt, machinery is used to transport the tiles up onto the roof. Instead of placing them immediately, they’re carefully stacked into small piles across the roof, making it easier to work efficiently and safely when the tiling begins. 💧 Installing Gutters for the First Time This building is also getting something new — gutters. It didn’t have any before, so installing them is an important upgrade, helping control rainwater and protect the walls below. With the east side now complete and fully tiled, attention shifts to the west side, which already shows clear signs of trouble. 🌿 Tackling the Overgrown West Side Even before scaffolding goes up, it’s obvious the west elevation is in poor condition. It’s been severely overgrown with brambles and greenery, with tiles missing at the bottom and parts of the roof already exposed. Before any roofing can begin, the area has to be cleared. Chainsaws come out to lop trees and remove the bramble, opening the roof back up to daylight. Once access is safe, scaffolding is installed so the team can work properly. Up close, the damage is confirmed — tiles have fallen away, leaving sections bare, and much of the timber underneath has rotted. These areas are carefully cut out, ready to be replaced with sound new beams before rebuilding starts. This episode shows both sides of restoration — finishing solid progress on one elevation while uncovering the real work waiting on the next.
